Longwood Squares Off Against Charleston Southern in Big South Tournament First Round

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Longwood University women’s basketball team earned the seven seed for the 2013 VisitMyrtleBeach.com Big South Conference Women’s Basketball Championship and will square off against No. 10 Charleston Southern University in a first-round game on Wednesday, March 6 beginning at 12 p.m. at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina. The Lancers, who finished the season with an 11-18 overall record and an 8-10 mark in conference play, swept the regular-season series against the Buccaneers, who finished 8-19 overall and 3-15 in league games.
The Lancers and the Lady Bucs met earlier this week, as Longwood took the lead for good with less than five minutes to go before earning the 79-73 victory at Willett Hall on February 28. Longwood also won the squads’ first meeting of the season, taking a 67-52 decision in Clinton, S.C. on January 12.
Other first-round games include No. 6 Radford University vs. No. 11 UNC Asheville (2 p.m.) and No. 8 Coastal Carolina University vs. No. 9 Gardner-Webb University (7 p.m.). Liberty won its 14th Big South women’s basketball regular-season title to earn the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye. Winthrop University, Presbyterian College, High Point University and Campbell University round out the top five seeds, in order, and will also receive first-round byes.
The quarterfinals will be played on Friday, March 8, with the winner of the Longwood vs. Charleston Southern game scheduled to play No. 2 Winthrop at 12 p.m. The tournament continues with the semifinals on Saturday, March 9 and the championship game on Sunday, March 10.
The first round and quarterfinals will air live on the Big South Network presented by State Farm, while the semifinals and finals will air on ESPN3. The Big South Tournament Champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament. The complete Big South Championship schedule is as follows:
