Mega Millions ticket purchased in Virginia wins estimated $95 million
Who is Virginia’s next multi-millionaire?

While the nation’s eyes were focused on Saturday’s Powerball drawing, two tickets matched all six numbers in Friday’s Mega Millions drawing. Those tickets, which were bought in Virginia and New Jersey, will now split the estimated $190 million jackpot ($95 million each). The Virginia ticket was bought in the Farmville area.

The winning numbers were 11-15-35-43-49 and the Mega Ball number 41.

Virginia Lottery officials will announce later Saturday the store at which the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased.

The Virginia winner has 180 days from the drawing to claim the prize. That person or persons will have a choice: Either take the full $95 million in 26 annual payments or a one-time cash option of approximately $70.3 million before taxes.

This is Virginia’s 8th Mega Millions jackpot win. In addition, Virginia had its first Powerball jackpot win in February, when Dave and Nancy Honeywell of Fredericksburg claimed a $217 million jackpot.

Personal property and real estate taxes are expected to increase in Charlotte County soon.

Media outlets report the Board of Supervisors there voted to advertise the six cent increase in real estate taxes for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, bringing the tax rate to $.48 per $100 of assessed value.

The Board is also advertising an increase of $.75 for personal property.

A recent real estate reassessment resulted in reduced land values. A public hearing is set on the proposed tax rates for June 17th at 7 PM in the County Administration Office.

A staff report released by Cumberland County officials this week found that by and large the Bodatious motor racing event held recently in Cartersville was in compliance with a conditional use permit issued by the Board of Supervisors.

Rachel Falkenstein is the county’s planner. She says the conditional permit had twenty six conditions, and the event was in violation of only one of those. She says a shot was fired during the event on Saturday, which violated one of the conditions.

Numerous Cartersville residents spoke out against the event last month and at this week’s Board of Supervisors meeting. County leaders are set to reexamine the conditional use permit in June.

Prince Edward County supervisors voted this week to delay amending the county’s zoning ordinance to add a corridor overlay district.

Supervisors expressed concern with enforcement and mandatory regulations associated with the change. Supervisor Jim Wilck purposed the delayed action. He says he spoke to many landowners and real estate agents, who said the real estate market is slow. He goes on to say that this new overlay district may make it harder to sell property, pushing buyers down the road to another area outside of the county.

The purpose of the district is to protect scenic beauty and view sheds, enhance levels of transportation, and increase property values. The proposed affected ares would include parts of Farmville, Pamplin, Prospect, Rice, Tuggle, Green Bay, Meherrin, and the new Granite Falls Boulevard.
